Maternal Health and FGM Rescue

At Nosim Women Organization, we are committed to safeguarding the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls. Our Maternal Health and FGM Rescue initiative addresses two critical issues faced by many Kenyan communities: inadequate maternal healthcare and the harmful practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Together, these challenges endanger the lives of women and girls, perpetuating cycles of poverty, trauma, and inequality.

Through a holistic and community-centered approach, we empower women with access to healthcare and advocate for the eradication of FGM, fostering healthier and more equitable societies.

Maternal Health: Protecting Mothers and Babies

The Challenge

Maternal health remains a critical concern in Kenya, particularly in rural and marginalized communities like Kajiado County. Challenges include:

Limited access to prenatal, delivery, and postnatal healthcare services.

Cultural barriers preventing women from seeking professional medical care.

Poor access to family planning and reproductive health education.

High rates of maternal mortality due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Our Approach

Nosim’s maternal health program focuses on creating sustainable and accessible healthcare solutions for women, ensuring safe pregnancies and healthy futures for mothers and their children.

  • Mobile Health Clinics:
Deploying mobile units equipped with medical supplies to reach remote villages. These clinics provide:
    • Prenatal care and nutritional support for pregnant women.
    • Skilled delivery assistance to reduce complications during childbirth.
    • Postnatal care, including vaccinations and breastfeeding education.
  • Partnerships with Local Clinics:
Strengthening existing healthcare facilities through resource provision, staff training, and infrastructure development.
  • Emergency Transport Systems:
Establishing community-supported transport services to ensure women can reach healthcare centers during emergencies.

  • Workshops and Counseling:
Educating women about reproductive health, safe motherhood, and family planning options to enable informed decisions.
  • Youth Engagement:
Reaching adolescents with age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education to prevent early pregnancies and unsafe practices.
  • Men’s Involvement:
Encouraging men to support family planning and maternal health, breaking cultural taboos around these topics.

Through our programs, we aim to achieve:

  • A 15% reduction in maternal deaths in target areas.
  • 90% of pregnant women accessing at least four antenatal visits during their pregnancy.
  • 80% of deliveries assisted by skilled healthcare providers.

FGM Rescue: Saving Lives, Transforming Futures

The Challenge

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted cultural practice that affects millions of girls globally, with Kenya being one of the high-prevalence countries. In the Maasai community, FGM is often seen as a rite of passage into womanhood, but its consequences are severe:

Psychological trauma and reduced educational and economic opportunities.

Immediate risks like excessive bleeding, infection, and death.

Long-term health issues, including chronic pain, infertility, and complications during childbirth.

Our Approach

Nosim Women Organization is at the forefront of the fight against FGM, combining rescue operations with advocacy and education to eradicate this harmful practice.

  • Safe Shelters:
Partnering with rescue centers like the AIC Girls Rescue Centre to provide secure environments for girls escaping FGM and forced marriages.
  • Counseling and Rehabilitation:
Offering psychological support to help rescued girls heal from trauma and reintegrate into society.
  • Education Opportunities:
Ensuring rescued girls are enrolled in schools or vocational training programs, empowering them to become independent and successful.

  • Engaging Local Leaders:
Collaborating with elders, chiefs, and religious leaders to challenge the cultural norms that perpetuate FGM.
  • Sensitization Campaigns:
Using town hall meetings, radio broadcasts, and social media to educate communities about the dangers of FGM and the importance of girls’ rights.
  • Empowering Survivors:
Training survivors of FGM as advocates to share their stories and inspire change within their communities.

  • Partnerships with Authorities:
Working closely with law enforcement to rescue girls, prosecute offenders, and enforce anti-FGM laws.
  • Policy Advocacy:
Lobbying for stronger national and local policies to protect girls and prevent FGM.
  • Monitoring and Reporting:
Establishing community-based monitoring systems to identify and report cases of FGM in real-time.
