Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention and Peacebuilding

At Nosim Women Organization, we believe that no woman or girl should live in fear of violence or be denied her right to peace, dignity, and opportunity. Our GBV Prevention and Peacebuilding initiative is dedicated to addressing the root causes of gender-based violence, supporting survivors, and fostering peaceful communities where every individual can thrive.

Our Commitment to Combating GBV

Gender-based violence remains a significant challenge in the Maasai community and other parts of Kenya. Harmful practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early and forced marriages, domestic violence, and sexual harassment continue to threaten the safety, health, and future of women and girls.

At Nosim, we take a holistic approach to addressing GBV, focusing on prevention, advocacy, survivor support, and community-wide peacebuilding. By empowering women and engaging men, we aim to break the cycle of violence and build a culture of respect and equality.

Key Pillars of Our GBV Prevention and Peacebuilding Work

1. Prevention Through Awareness and Advocacy

We believe that education is key to preventing GBV. Nosim conducts widespread sensitization campaigns to educate communities about the dangers of GBV, its legal consequences, and the rights of women and girls.

Organizing town halls and workshops in villages to raise awareness of GBV and harmful cultural practices.

Topics include:

  • Women’s and girls’ rights under Kenyan law.
  • The physical and emotional consequences of GBV.
  • The importance of gender equality in families and communities.

Engaging schools to educate students on GBV prevention, consent, and respect. Our “Safe Schools” initiative provides teachers with the tools to identify and support students at risk of abuse.

Broadcasting powerful messages through local radio, TV, and social media to challenge harmful stereotypes and promote gender equality.

2. Supporting Survivors of GBV

Survivors of GBV often face immense physical, emotional, and social challenges. Nosim provides comprehensive support services to help survivors heal and rebuild their lives.

Collaborating with rescue centers to provide safe havens for women and girls escaping violence. These centers offer shelter, food, and safety while survivors regain stability.

Partnering with trained counselors to provide trauma-informed care for survivors, helping them process their experiences and regain confidence.

Connecting survivors with healthcare providers for treatment of physical injuries and medical examinations, including post-rape care.

Assisting survivors in seeking justice by providing legal support, connecting them with law enforcement, and advocating for their rights in court.

3. Engaging Men and Boys

To create lasting change, it’s vital to involve men and boys in the fight against GBV. Nosim’s initiatives encourage men to become allies in promoting gender equality and ending violence.

Training local male leaders to advocate against GBV and support women’s rights within their communities.

Engaging boys in discussions about respect, consent, and healthy relationships through school-based and community programs.

4. Strengthening Community Structures

Empowered communities play a crucial role in preventing GBV and maintaining peace. Nosim works to build the capacity of local leaders, groups, and institutions to address GBV effectively.

Establishing community-based groups to monitor and report cases of GBV while promoting peaceful conflict resolution.

Providing training for elders, chiefs, and religious leaders to support GBV survivors, challenge harmful norms, and enforce anti-GBV laws.

Supporting young people to lead campaigns and activities that promote understanding, tolerance, and peace in their communities.

5. Advocacy for Policy and Legal Reform

Nosim collaborates with government bodies and other organizations to strengthen policies and laws that protect women and girls from GBV.

Working with policymakers to enhance laws against FGM, domestic violence, and sexual harassment while advocating for stricter enforcement.

Providing sensitivity training for police officers to ensure they handle GBV cases with professionalism and empathy.

Encouraging communities to hold local authorities accountable for addressing GBV cases promptly and effectively.
